Poe and Ranpo first met six years before the main story takes place. The two of them were in an investigation competition against each other, and Ranpo beat Poe, making the latter fall into depression and cast himself away. Poe harbored great anger over his defeat and vowed to have revenge on Ranpo and surpass him. Because of that, Poe soon joined the Guild in order to challenge Ranpo with his new writing capabilities and spent years creating a mystery Ranpo would be unable to solve. Poe has great respect and awe towards Ranpo’s abilities, while Ranpo acknowledges Poe’s skill and stated that he was the only detective who was on par with him. The two are currently allied and are on good terms. Poe & Ranpo’s first on-screen interaction is during the Guild Arc when Poe sends Ranpo a letter inviting him to a challenge during the three-way struggle between the Armed Detective Agency, the Port Mafia, and the Guild. When Ranpo and Akiko Yosano arrived, Poe had started to monologue on how his defeat by Ranpo’s hands had shaped who he was to this day and affected him greatly. While announcing this Ranpo interrupts and comically asks who Poe is, which saddened Poe greatly. Poe then revealed his motive for inviting the two to a “Deduction Game”, making a deal; he shows Ranpo and Yosano a new novel he had written, and if the two could solve the mystery behind the story, he would reveal the Guild's weaknesses
